Have you seen the article in the Citylife Independent Herald Wednesday, June 15, 2011 p3 "Power of persuation pays off " by Kate Bleasdale about the new painted pedestrian crossing on Newlands Road between Black Rock Road and Salford Street?.
Gael Hanbrook has campained Wellington City Council for the past three years for this crossing. There is a nice photo of Gael and her guide dog Grady using the pedestrian crossing accompling the article.
Paws up to you, Gael for your efforts! and to council's traffic engineer, Stuart Bullen.
This pedestrian crossing has made crossing the road much, much safer for all local walkers- students, bus users, shoppers and ..... Dog Walkers! And it even has its own night lights!
It does slow up traffic at peak times, But this is a bonus for drivers coming out of both Salford Street and to a lesser extent Black Rock Road who often have a long wait to exit.
The bus drivers often park as far as they can from the crossing so the traffic can continue to flow, thanks for that! Still a few details to workout such as bus stop and bus shelter relocation...
The previous crossing on the corner of Newlands Road up from BP opposite the War Memorial to the shops was removed back in the late 80's early '90s ?, from memory, great to see this one replacing it! Its been a while.
