Grasslees Reserve Dog Exercise Area

Grasslees Reserve Dog Exercise Area

- no not Newlands .... but nearby ! a 10min or so drive...

Grasslees Reserve is getting a $650,000 makeover !

This 2 hectare reserve is adjacent to Tawa Pool.

And in the words of the Council "... The park is bounded on the western edge by Main Road , the main link between Tawa and Porirua."

This Boundary along side the Main Road requires a Dog Proof fence to keep Dogs Safe !

These plans include a new Picnic and BBQ Area along side the Off Leash Dog Exercise Area ! This in itself is a very good reason to Fully enclose the Dog Park !

So please do send online Feedback on this for Our Dogs Sakes!

Last chance for Feedback as it closes today at 5pm, Friday the 14th of December 2012 !

Update: Monday 18th February 2013

Grasslees Reserve upgrade

The Council has received 45 submissions from Tawa residents on its plans for a major upgrade for the Grasslees Reserve. We are hoping to be able to respond to submitters by the end of February.

The Council is considering building new paths and a bridge to better integrate the two halves of the park and improve links to the Porirua Stream. The old skate rink would be redeveloped as an area for young children on wheels, bikes and scooters. There would be new toilets, a basketball court and more parking. Improvements are also planned for the picnic area – with new plantings – and a bigger play area. The work will be done this year, funded by the Plimmer Bequest.

* Dog Exercise Area

Nearly half of the submissions (numbering 44 in total ) requested fencing off the dog exercise area, especially along the Main Road boundary. Some submitters also wanted the dog exercise area fully fenced including fencing off from the picnic and play areas.

In response to the feedback and concerns, the Council will install a fence along the Main Road boundary. This will be a 1m high chainlink fence in the middle of shrub planting. This will prevent dogs ( and children ) from being able to easily access Main Road and the planting will eventually screen the fence to create a more attractive and unobtrusive appearance.

We do not intend to fully fence off the dog exercise area from the rest of the Reserve. We do not wish to make this area exclusive as there is a desire from the wider community for the continuing ability to use this space. It is worth noting that in accordance with the Council's Dog Control Policy 2009, dogs are to be kept under control at all times, including in dog exercise areas.

Well at least the Roadside is to be fenced with a 1m high chainlink fence... but there is no mention of gated entrances along the roadside !

So here's hoping that this fence has "wings" turning back into the park, along side each pathway to encourage dogs...

And children, to turn back into the park,

rather that being able to pop around the ends of the roadside fence, onto the roadway !

( the stairs at the north entrance already have a handrail...

adding chainlink to this handrail should be straight forward ! )

What do you think ?
